Speaker: Jim Dinkey

As most of you know the spam and virus/worm problems are just getting worse. Jim Dinkey has seen it first hand as machines come in for repair. He has offered to speak again and present solutions for protecting yourself.

Jim will discuss the following:

The underlying problem is that the 60% of the computers out in the real world have not been modified in any way from the way they came out of the box. That is where all of the zombies come from.The real subject is how to protect yourself in a hostile environment.

There is one setup for broadband and another for dialup.

There is a procedure for controlling spam which bounces against a world-wide database.

There are also ways to assure that web-scraping robots do not add your name to the millions of spam lists.

And finally, a Q & A session will be provided.

Joop Verbaken will be our speaker on the Archimedes project at Stanford on Computer Technology for Accessibility Features for future computer systems. This project includes developing extremely simple interfaces to the computer to assist older people who may not have the ability/capacity to work with a keyboard or mouse. The need for backup and a number of available backup support programs will be compared.

The meeting will be opened with a discussion about need for speakers followed by an Open Access period.

I will have my computer on site connected to the Hillview Senior Center Plasma Display.

I will use this equipment to discuss my Digital Still Picture experience with emphasis on using the computer to view pictures vs printing. Adobe Album will be demonstrated.

Speaker: Tour
June 11 meeting will be tour of Wallenburg Hall at Stanford Univ. This is a new facility of the Education Department which features teaching facilities with high-tech capabilites. Multi-media and computerized systems are made available for teachers to develop new course material.

Tour maps will be posted and luncheon arrangements to be announced.

Our member Jim Dinkey will speak May 14 on the "Realities of the Marketplace" including discussion of the latest product offerings and their importance.

Jim is President of the Palo Alto Computer Users Group and well know to all from his Saturday clinic for ailing computers.

The next meeting will be the first of several on the computers and photography. We have an expert on digital video photography and he is helping to find another expert on digital still photography.

Our CompuSIR speakers for the March 9th meeting on experiences with digital cameras are CompuSIR members Roger Summit and Bob DeGrasse. This will be a live demonstration with equipment on display!

Roger plans so speak on the following:

A. Illustrate use of IrfanView (free downloadable PC software) to:
1. Display of stored photos and movies.
2. Photo editing: Crop, Color Balance, Contrast, etc.
3. Sorting and filing a folder of photos.
4. Building a panarama view
B. Use of PhotoElf to create a flexible montage from a set of photos.

Speaker: Mike Langberg, San Jose Mercury News Personal Technology Editor
Mike Langberg is Personal Technology Editor of the San Jose Mercury News, the daily newspaper of Silicon Valley. He writes the Tech Test Drive column appearing every Thursday, reviewing new products and services in computing, consumer electronics and the Internet.He will discuss the Consumer Electronics show Jan. 2003

Mike spoke to us in 200 and 2002.

Speaker: Stacey Wagner, Director of External Affairs for SBC
Our CompuSIR speaker for the January 8th meeting is Stacey Wagner who will provide a "Telecom update from SBC" Her talk will discuss DSL, the regulatory environment, SBC's new branding change, and long distance services.

Stacey Wagner has been with the company for close to two years. She is primarily responsible for the government and community relations at the federal, state and local levels in San Mateo and Northern Santa Clara Counties.

Prior to coming to SBC, she was the District Director for former-Assemblyman Ted Lempert for two years. Prior to that, she worked for former-Senator now Attorney General Bill Lockyer for 12.5 years in the East Bay.
