  • DiscMapper generates a graphical portrayal of the space utilization on your disc - rectangles with size proportional to space for all files and folders. This is a great tool for determining where you are using disc space - invaluable for cleanup.

  • This is a great text editor. Not a word processor, it does not provide for font formatting. But for dealing with plain text - searching, editing, etc., it is unbeatable. Whether you simply need a powerful replacement for Notepad, a tool for editing your web pages, or a programming IDE, TextPad does what you want, the way you would expect.

Paint Shop Pro - list.jasc.com/

  • This is Adobe Photoshop for about one sixth the price. A very powerful graphics tool, it has a steep learning curve. But once learned, there isn't much it can't do.

  • This is a great improvement on Microsoft's defragmenter. It is faster, can run in the background (as opposed to requiring SAFE MODE), and can be scheduled to run automatically to keep your disk defragmented.

Mozilla Firefox - http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

  • This browser has taken off like gangbusters. It has better features than Internet Explorer, is easy to install, is free, and isn't a target for all the virus writers that look for holes in IE.

FileSync - http://www.fileware.com/index.htm

  • This is a fine utility for keeping two computers in sync. It compares files in selected locations on the two PCs based on user-selectable criteria and allows you to copy some or all of the differing or missing files in either direction. Easy to use and fast.
